Red Molly
Thursday, September 16
7:30pm
$17 ($15 members)
Pittsburgh Center
for the Arts
(6300 Fifth Ave., Shadyside)
Red Molly brings concert-goers to their feet with stunning three-part harmonies, crisp musicianship and a warm, engaging stage presence. They have earned a devoted and ever-widening fan base, and have begun to tour nationally. The band has a lot of fun on stage, and it's contagious.
The Boston Globe says: "Everything Red Molly sings is delivered with tick-tight arrangements, crystalline vocals, and caramel harmonies. But what is most striking is the ardor they bring to everything they do, whether snuggling into the sweet parochialism of an old spiritual, or the gritty pathos of a Gillian Welch tune. They come on less like stars strutting for their minions than pals sharing their favorite songs. In the friendly world of the coffeehouse, that remains a star-making quality."
Red Molly is: Laurie MacAllister (vocals, banjo, bass), Abbie Gardner (vocals, dobro, acoustic guitar), and
Molly Venter (acoustic guitar, vocals).

The Wiyos
Thursday, November 11
7:30pm
$17 ($15 members)
Pittsburgh Center
for the Arts
(6300 Fifth Ave., Shadyside)
“(The Wiyos) bring exuberance and intensity to these vintage styles, and its performances are layered with vaudevillian stage antics” –The New Yorker
The Wiyos was formed on the lower east side of Manhattan during the summer of 2002, named after The Why’os, an old street gang from the area. Since that time, The Wiyos have kept up an extensive touring schedule, which in the summer of 2009 included touring with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and John Mellencamp.
The band’s eclectic debut album, entitled Porcupine, echoed the band’s expansive musical tastes ranging from early jazz to hip-hop, country blues to classic rock, New Orleans brass bands to Appalachian stringbands. Around the time of the first record, they began to devote themselves intensely to the study of the spectrum of traditional American musical idioms that were recorded from circa 1900 through the 1930's.
Both the second album Hat Trick and the most recent The Wiyos derive inspiration from the great dance bands and house party music of 80-90 years ago, the syncopation of swing, the grit and intensity of rural blues, the bouncing rhythms of piedmont fingerpicking, and the vocal antics, mannerisms and physical comedy of vaudeville-era performers.
